 . . Died The *JACS* publication that includes this Special Issue contains an article by the Editor-in-Chief, David H. Christianson (Catholic University of America), entitled, "Analytical Chemistry Has Made Significant Progress in the Last Two Decades. Several Methods Have Come to the Forefront While Some Classical Methods Have Died" (**[ which is the foreword to the current issue. Christianson summarizes the history of the journal and then looks at how analytical chemistry has evolved and how it continues to grow, along with encouraging young scientists to consider a career in analytical chemistry. He then states that the application of analytical chemistry has been an important part of the science, and its impact continues to grow. There have been several advances in analytical chemistry, such as the development of: fluorescence detection, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization, mass spectrometry, and ion mobility spectrometry. In terms of the application of analytical chemistry, he describes how analytical chemistry has been used in many areas, including the clinical setting. He discusses the impact of analytical chemistry in the environmental and national security arenas, including nuclear materials, weapons of mass destruction, toxic and hazardous chemicals, and chemical terrorism. He also touches on the impact of analytical chemistry on manufacturing. The remainder of the text is divided into sections based on the various subareas of analytical chemistry. Each of these sections starts with a brief history of that area, followed by a discussion of the currently used methods for analyzing a specific type of chemical or chemical compound. As an example, he talks about the use of chromatography and describes a separation using a standard set of columns in the laboratory. This is followed by an introduction of new types of separation and detection devices and imaging devices, which are used to measure the interactions of molecules. Finally, Christianson includes a table summarizing the primary methods and the evolution of each of the various techniques. This provides the user with an understanding of the evolution of the various methods, the current methods, and potential future developments. This Special Issue includes contributions by several of the editors and peer reviewers, as well as a collection of new and/or unpublished research papers.
